January 3, 2010

Happy new year everybody! As promised I’m starting my blogging again in the new year. What do you want to achieve this year? I, myself haven’t really thought of anything yet the only thing I want to do right now is concentrate on school since I’m in my last year.

So last Wednesday, 30st of December, me and my best friend Amber went to Amsterdam. When people mention Amsterdam they think weed, and prostitutes but Amsterdam is more then that. They’ve got really cute vintage shops in ‘De Negen Straatjes’ which means ‘The Nine Streets’ or ‘The Nine Little Streets’ in English. All the stores (excluding some of them like the le coq sportif store) are special in their own kind of way, and there are alot of vintage shops there! But the vintage shop I loved the most was Joosje, which is not located in the Nine streets. Bought my mom a pair of earrings there and myself a really cute brooche.

As you can probably see yourself, this is my brooche. It’s a circusclown that, when attached to your shirt or other garment, moves his legs when you move. This gives the impression that the clown is jumping or swinging around. Haven’t got a pic of my mom’s earrings yet, but they’re pretty simple, yet very nice.

Go visit Joosje when you’re in Amsterdam! It’s not only vintage, also new stuff. She sells vintage stuff downstairs, and upstairs she sells stuff of designers from Isreal and her own clothing line. The jewellery is everywhere, and the stuff isn’t very expensive at all. Then I’m talking about the jewellery haven’t seen the tags of the clothing yet. I bought the brooche and the earrings for 8 euros. 2 earrings for €8,- be sure to check the store or the website.

Last Thursday, the last day of 2009 my mom bought me a bracelet. I fancy the bracelet, it’s pretty and so simple! Picture below.

It’s just silver but I love it!

I just love those new pair of boots, when I first saw them I instantly fell in love with them. You can’t see them very well  but in my next post I’ll show a picture up close. I’ll be wearing them to a job interview I have tomorrow morning. I’m so nervous!

Le Petit Antoine

December 1, 2009

You probably haven’t heard of Antoine Peters when you’re not from The Netherlands. But since I am, I did hear from him and saw him in person when he gave me and 20 other people a presentation about his work as a fashion designer. And yes, I was impressed! But who is he?

Antoine Peters is a dutch fashion designer. After he graduated from Fashion Institute Arnhem in the Netherlands he got to show for Amsterdam International Fashion Week with some other designers. He has worked for the dutch AvantGarde magazine, Viktor & Rolf and is one of Hollands most promising designers. There’s one thing that one can always see and feel when they are looking at his collection: Humor. Humor is one of the most important things when it comes to him designing clothes. With titles for his runway shows as: ‘Fat People Are Harder To Kidnap’ and ‘Turn Your Frown Upside Down’ he always makes the crowd laughing before the show even starts. Even the tags in his garments are in the shape of a smile, and they are stitched in a way so that on the backside of the garment is a little smile.

He’s also well known for his idea: A Sweater For The World. This is a huge sweater that can be worn as an oversized dress but also as just a sweater for two (or more) people. Also this idea, comes back into some of his collections.

In most of his collections patterns are used, no not the usual patterns that we already know like the scottish pattern or pied-de-poule but patterns he creates himself. Like in the collections: ‘I’m with stupid’, ‘Fat People Are Harder To Kidnap’ and ‘To Make An Elephant Out Of A Mosquito.’

The first five pictures are pictures taken from the collection: ‘Fat People Are Harder To Kidnap’. He uses a pattern he created himself. The pattern consists of pieces cut from the newspaper that we sometimes see in movies (old movies most of the time) when they show us a threatening letter. In the third and the fourth picture we can see this clearly, but when you focus on the first two pictures you can see that the pattern on the garment is the same as the others but only it’s a magnification. This collection is from the FW 08/09 show.

The last four pictures are taken from the collection: ‘I’m With Stupid’. He was inspired by the cheesy T-Shirts that say: I’m With Stupid with a arrow under them pointing to the person next to them. I’m not really a fan of these patterns but some really stand out.  This collection is from the FW/2010 show. Which is his latest collection. In both of these collection we can see a lot of drapery.

The pictures 7 to 16 are taken from the collection: ‘To Make An Elephant Out Of A Mosquito’. This a dutch saying: ‘Van een mug een olifant maken.’ Which basically means: that someone makes something bigger and worse then it actually is. This saying is often used when someone makes a big problem over nothing. We see shapes that are inspired by the shape of an elephant like the shoes of the first picture in this post. And there is a mosquito pattern all over the dresses. Then there are the jumpsuits which makes the arm appear as the nose of an elephant. Picture 13 and 14 have a pattern that looks like this up close:

He told us: ‘I use these catwalk shows for publicity, a way to show what I’m capable of.’And he sure did!

Go to http://antoinepeters.com for more of his collections. (Fat People Are Harder To Kidnap, Le Petit Antoine and etc.)

Queen of Knits pour H&M

November 28, 2009

A while ago I read on Wikipedia that Sonia Rykiel was the next designer after JC that will be designing for H&M: Sonia Rykiel pour H&M. She’s a great designer and I personally think H&M should be proud to have such a great designer as her designing for their company (And I’m sure they are very, very grateful.) I totally forgot about the whole Sonia Rykiel for H&M thing and when I was reading the dutch ELLE today I came by ads for this collection. So this news isn’t that recent anymore, but I’m still going to write a post about it. The collection consists of ladies underwear. The prices are really reasonable. I’m not a fan of everything in the collection, but a little diversity is always good right? And that’s exactly what she did, but still she managed to make a collection instead of garments that don’t have a connection at all. The collection will launch on December 5 and will be available in 1500 H&M stores all over the world. Not only in the H&M stores but for the first time for H&M the collection will be in the Sonia Rykiel stores too. This is not the only collection she will design for H&M in 2010 she will design a knitwear collection (ofcourse, this is where she’s famous for) plus an accessory collection on 20 February.

A must-have item this fall is the biker jacket. And I picked my favorites with a little explanation why I choose that particular jacket. You can click on the pictures to see them in full size.

Picture: http://style.com This is my absolute favorite. But it’s really the overall outfit that does it for me. The model plus the jewelry makes it look so chic. The jacket is from Blumarine.

And then there’s this amazing biker jacket by Diesel. The gradient effect in the shape of smoky swirls plus the black and gray in the jacket make it look so mysterious.

This jacket from Julien Macdonald has an military edge to it, yet it still manages to stay chic. The things on the shoulders are kind of abstract which is why really love this jacket. The shape of the jacket  itself is so minimalistic but the ‘spikes’ on the shoulders gives the garment that extra boost. You shouldn’t wear this jacket when your broad-shouldered though. But I think that speaks for itself.

This vintage jacket from the 80’s was on the website of Nasty Gal. The oversized tuxedo lapels look amazing in combination with the black leather and the gold buttons.

You can buy this jacket for 248 dollars on nasty gal.

Dove of Style

November 20, 2009

Fierce Stone cold sober, New York and her latest single Do You Want The Truth or Something Beautiful (same title as her album) are songs I love, and could listen to 24 hours a day. I’m talking about Paloma Faith . She’s an English singer and actress, was born in London and her voice got compared with Etta James’ on Jools Holland. But that’s not all, she’s also becoming a favorite in the world of fashion and is (in my opinion) a real fashion icon already! Her style is influenced by the 50’s and most of the time she can be seen wearing vintage clothing. She’s in one word unique, her look and her voice. She’s half English and half spanish, which explains her spanish name: Paloma which means dove. This also explains the dove tattoo on her shoulder (which looks amazing in the New York music video) and the two doves on her album cover.

On the last picture she’s working a creation of Ashish Gupta.

Her album: ‘Do you want the truth or something beautiful?’ Has been in the stores for a while, but if you don’t have it already: Don’t hesitate and buy your own!

Similarities

November 19, 2009

Already seen the new series on FOX? Glee is about a Spanish teacher who tries to reform the Glee Club to it’s former glory. Emma Pillsbury is a teacher on the same school, she has enormous eyes, a sweet personality and is a mysophobic. After watching the first six episodes I couldn’t help it to see some similarities between Emma Pillsbury and Blair Waldorf (Gossip Girl). Although Emma isn’t about the brands, since the whole Glee series isn’t about fashion or the upper east side of Manhattan there were just a few things that reminded me of Blair, the girl she was in the 1st season of Gossip Girl. And no, I’m not suggesting that Glee copied the whole Blair look. I just wanted to tell ya’ll.

Glee’s first season airs on Wednesdays 9/8 C on FOX .

Gossip Girl’s third season airs on Mondays 9/8 C on the CW.

Alien Where haven’t we seen those shoes lately? Images of those shoes are on almost every fashion blog. But I’m not posting this because of that.

As all the Lady Gaga fans know her new video for the song Bad Romance came out on the 10th of November. And other then her crazy hairstyles, amazing outfits and taped nipples we can see her working a few pair of Alexander McQueen heels in the video.

McQueen used the song at the end of his runway show for the Spring/Summer 2010 collection.

The video can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACm9yECwSso
